Ancient Jewish Cemetery of via Wiel

The oldest preserved Jewish cemetery in Padua

Established in 1384, the cemetery overlooking Via Wiel is one of the four Jewish cemeteries still existing in the city. Now no longer in use, this ancient cemetery remains a precious testimony of the past and houses the tombs of some renowned Jewish personalities who lived in Padua: among these the rabbi Meir Katzenellenbogen and the doctor Abram Catalan.

Inside the cemetery, it is still possible to glimpse the narrow original access door, now closed, between the bricks of the surrounding wall that runs along Via Campagnola and to closely observe the ancient symbols that decorate the gravestones.

Book your visit now

The Cemetery of Via Wiel is visitable every Sunday with fixed starting tours from the entrance to the Cemetery (via Wiel 24) (from April to September at 10:00 AM, and from October to March at 11:00 AM) or by appointment on other days (except Saturdays).

As the cemetery is a historical site not in use, it is necessary to book the visit at least 2 days in advance; otherwise, access cannot be guaranteed

In place, admission tickets can only be paid for in cash.

Your visit can be completed by choosing a combined ticket that includes entry to the Museum of Jewish Padua and the Italian Synagogue.

Additional Note: The Jewish cemetery currently active in Padua is the one in via Sorio where tombs have been found since 1862: it can be visited free of charge but it is necessary to respect the opening hours found on the Jewish Community page.

The ancient Jewish cemeteries of via Campagnola and via Canal can also be visited upon request
